Right first up let's get the (well mine - everyone has 'em!) excuses out of the way! I wasn't thinking straight. Not only did I NOT try Rob's MiNe's ECU for the big day, but, Rob and I swapped cars on the way, needless to say both cars arrived rather hot and bothered. My car went straight on the dyno, brakes smoking, exhaust ticking as it cooled etc and pulled 1 less kW than the last time I was on this dyno. Last time (during the oil change dyno) Aaron and I were pretty much even, but he is smarter than me, he got there early too, but he is no fool, he parked in the shade and waited to the end - his car was nice and cool and he had new spark plugs - those fancy 4 prong Bosch things - and the rest they say is history! So Aaron is V8 King again ! ( I reckon Aaron's was down before - even cool and with new plugs I doubt I would've matched Aaron today)
As you can see from this graph Emanuel was miles in front - see mods to his car on the TT upgrade page.
Here the most common V8 Soarer - the UZZ31 airbag autos together. Looks like Murray needs a tune up - the car is immaculate though. Same dyno settings for all cars. Typical for the V8 the stock power is between 120 - 130 rwkw. Do what you like to the exhaust and intake and the most you can expect is mid 140 rwkw.
Ahh yes - the V8 and TT battle. In mild and stock form there isn't much difference in peak power. In fact you couldn't split Aaron and Wayne for peak power honours in the auto Soarer division. But the dyno doesn't reflect the on road feel. On the dyno the TT is on full boost and full load - this gives max power. Off boost the V8 feels stronger to drive around, on boost the TT leaves the V8 for dead - especially down low since it has less mass and shorter gearing. At the lights the TT will hose off the V8 every time. Once under way it is more even - both cars go plenty fast enough. The V8 has a more linear power delivery - easy to keep constant power with constant throttle, close the throttle and you get engine braking, part throttle and you know what you will get. The TT is different - it's power comes on with a rush, take the foot off and the car just rolls along - a different driving feel altogether. Both cars are a delight to drive.
The manual TT boys - Emanuel had the edge with an intercooler and modified turbos.
The lonely UZZ32 division. The 32's are infamous for being a bit slow. Not only heavy, but the suspension pump drains power and the ECU is ultra mild, protects the engine and pump with nice gentle take-offs. A bit of intake and exhaust work (and cams in my case) and the car is alive and pulls strong. Only 2 UZZ32's on the day - not many of them around. Barry's is a typical stock example - reminds me of my car when I first got it. The improvements are obvious and are reflected in the driving experience.
Wayne and I live in Adelaide - it's a 800 km (500 mile) drive to get to Melbourne - takes about 8 hours. This is Wayne's car from my window.
Official Fuel figures from scientific interstate travelling: TT and V8 travelling
together.
Cruising at 110 - 100 km/hr, Tailem Bend to Horsham (about 345km).
Twin Turbo (Wayne Looker), 9.9 l/100km = 28.5 mpg = 10.1 km/litre
UZZ32 V8 (me), 11.12 l/100 km = 26 mpg = 8.9 km/litre.
UZZ32 V8 is about 190 kg heavier than TT and the V8 powers the suspension, it has worse
fuel economy of all Soarers.
Emanuel Spinola has been recording fuel for his Soarer for ever: 1135 Litres for
9155 kilometres averaging 8.06Km/L. Best economy was a stint of 10.16Km/L on a steady 120
KPH and worst was 6.83Km/L(surprise, surprise) during the Gippsland Cruise/Thrash.
Interestingly, extended periods on cruise control on the Nullarbor somewhat above the
speed limit yielded good results of ~8.5Km/L .
Here is a handy conversion table I made up:
litres/100km | mpg | km/litre |
8 | 35.5 | 12.5 |
9 | 31.5 | 11.1 |
10 | 28.4 | 10.0 |
11 | 25.8 | 9.1 |
12 | 23.6 | 8.3 |
13 | 21.8 | 7.7 |
14 | 20.3 | 7.1 |
15 | 18.9 | 6.7 |
16 | 17.7 | 6.3 |
17 | 16.7 | 5.9 |
18 | 15.8 | 5.6 |
19 | 14.9 | 5.3 |
Wayne might have beaten me on the fuel economy - he used about 5 litres less petrol on the
345 km trip. But he didn't have a TV or leather and I can drink more Ice Coffee (and
faster too) than he can. So all up it's pretty even! Adelaide is the only city on the
Planet where Coke is not the number One soft drink - In Adelaide it's Farmer's Union Ice
Coffee - sounds strange to everyone else NOT from Adelaide but there you go.
Wayne's front on left, mine on right. Both of us running Kuhmo Ecstas 712 - Wayne's had worn funny with bad alignment and now the car was tramlining - no problems on mine with 38 mm offset.
In order of dyno appearance:
My car was first up. |
Then Wayne had a go. |
Rob A and his V8 |
Neil Griffiths - resident ALSC forum Mechanic and all round nice guy. Neil imports, wrecks, services, fixes and sells parts for the Soarer. |
Bob was at Terry's wedding too. |
Soarer DieHard award goes to Stan. Stan has a really nice V8 -but his wife likes the car so much that Stan doesn't get a chance to see it much any more. On this Saturday Stan's wife had some important shoe shopping lined up, and Stan didn't have a car. But no Soarer wasn't going to stop Stan, no sir! As Stan likes to say "have cash buy Soarer" - so he did. He already had a green V8 so he went and bought a nice gold TT for $13 000 - great price. He brought it straight to the dyno day where we all found out it had retreaded tyres! Naturally enough they blew up on the dyno and there is a new rule at the dyno place, it was sent out to all of us. Basically it said no retreaded tyres blah blah blah - we call it the Stan rule! Stan still had cash and as he likes to say "have cash buy tyres" - so he did - he limped down to the nearest tyre place and bought some nice shiny new tyres and came back to the dyno day for another go. You see nothing was going to stop Stan from having a go on the dyno. Where everyone else spent $20 for a dyno run, Stan spent $13620 ! "I still got lots left" said Stan. |
Mr Cool as a Cucumber Emanuel Spinola - "I hope to get 190 rwkw" said Emanuel to the crowd before his 243 rwkw first run. "stop - that'll do me - I don't need no stinkin' 2nd run" said Emanuel. "All I've done to the car since my last 199 rwkw run is 0.1 bar of boost and the BFI - I love my BFI...." - true! |
Now I think Nina officially gives owner rights to her partner for this car - but whoever drives it onto the dyno gets the prestige around here. |
My arch nemesis Steve Howlett !. Last time I beat Steve by 0.5 kilowatts or something - today was his turn in the Sun. Steve can not only pick up a footy with one hand, he can pop them! |
Kris and his TT |
Craig and TT |
Dennis and TT |
Craig Dean, the fastest Soarer driver in Australia and a VVTi manual single turbo - didn't perform like last year. In his spare time Craig comes 2nd in Targa Tas and sets lap records at Phillip Island. April 6th 2003 he will be at Phillip Island with ALSC for timed sprints - I'll be there! |
Yeah baby! - looks great doesn't it? Comes with genuine Lambo parts like glass, badges, gauges, caps, lights etc. Absolutely beautiful. Mick runs Carbontech and can supply street camshafts and shims for the 1UZ-FE that give an extra 50 hp (37kw) at the flywheel with stock ECU !!! Wow! $1870 I went for a drive in this car and it is fabulous. On the right hand side is John |
Barry and his burgundy UZZ32 with DVD etc |
Murray's V8 looks stunning. |
Steve Malkin (stainless braided hose fame) with his TT. New PowerFC computer giving a few hiccups. |
Aaron V8 kilowatt king again! |
1UZ-FE with 2nd hand Vortech and EMS computer - typical Vortech rattle at idle. |
I'm not sure how it happened, but Wayne got stuck with the results book and the camera. After a couple of dyno runs I went out to play gloryboy while went sweated it out in the dyno garage writing everything down and answering the same questions again and again. Good effort Wayne!
Here I am pretending it's my Lambo after a short drive with Mick - I love this car! Genuine glass, lights, wheel caps, valve caps, badges, gauges - a work of art!
The Toyota 1UZ-FE is reliable and provides plenty of power for the 1000 odd kg car. Read all about it in Zoom - or check out the website: Carbontech
I also drove Emanuel's winning car - a smooth lovely car to drive. Big Supra brakes give great feel, it drives like a normal car but stronger, then it comes on boost and Sheeeeesssssssh! - What a machine!
After the dyno day I went back to Rob's and Andy came around with his supercharged Soarer - he drives it every day and things are going just fine - the kit will be a reality - budget $7000 Aud for the bits. Anyway we are raving on about the day etc and talking about the future plans for the supercharger when Andy lets it slip that the higher boost smaller pulley is in the boot - he just hasn't got around to changing it! Soon as he said this Rob had the tools out and we cheered Andy on as we used peer pressure to get the pulley changed then and there! It was a simple job. The car improved. It's running the stock ECM still - just a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Seems the car gets better after a couple of days - perhaps the ECM is learning and adjusting. The beauty of having a kit that works with the stock car is that it still runs nice and smooth like OEM, the air cond idle is still perfect, the closed loop cruise is still ok, the knock sensors are still just fine - just like a factory car - but with 40 % more torque off the line all the way through to redline.
I wasn't joking about the whole Ice Coffee thing in South Australia - driving back from Melbourne you get to Dadswell Creek (Big Koala) and you see signs like this! I did miss it - and rushed straight in to get myself some more ice coffee magic!
All the winners got a certificate to hang on the wall. The guys even gave me a nice pink one for not winning - thanks guys! Wayne drove over to my house special just to hand it to me and person and take this photo.
Quick AVI movie of my car on the dyno. This was the last time anyone was allowed to stand by the car - a nogo zone. The Red painted area and behind the car is strictly no spectators.
More? I know you want more! Aaron is a bit of a wiz with the computers. He knows how to work the dyno dynamics software, he knows the passwords, he knows where the files are, he knows dos commands, he types faster in code than I can speak, and screens flash up on the monitor and he's into obscure menu's and talking jargon faster than my jaw dropping. So thanks to Aaron we have all the screen dumps of all the dyno graphs PLUS we have all the data files of all the runs. They are what I used to make the excel overlay graphs up the top..
All the graphs from the day : Graphs.zip( 210 kb)
All the data files (small text files) of all the data from dyno dynamics - shows the settings of the dynamometer, temperature of each run, time date etc etc etc: alsc-dd2.zip (108kb)
