The Battered Sav

December 2001 by Peter Scott

A while ago I replaced the four rear mufflers with a single 2.5 inch pipe and single 2.5 inch straight through muffler (see pics and sounds in earlier pages.

It sounded great and went a lot better (see the acceleration tests). But it only had a single tip out the back (double cutouts) and I wanted to replace the whole lot.

Mark from Exhaust Technology (Adelaide) http://www.exhausttechnology.com.au/ has just recently built and tested the 10 inch x-pipe. He knows Mark Tilbrook (Adelaide) who did the x-pipe in the V8 SuperCar Exhaust article. Mark said that the stamped x-pipe was better acoustically than the 10 inch custom one (better separation of pulses, nicer tone - overall sounds better) and that on the dyno the power gains were of the same order. It was also lighter, and quicker and easier to fit. So I went and picked one up two days ago! I am going for the 2.5 inch stainless (2.5 inch core). It is imported from USA (MagnaFlow?) - mild steel in this size wasn't available locally. I picked mine up from MotorMate (St Marys). Andrew (my brother) owns the store. http://www.motormate.com.au/

Rear stainless tips, follow cutouts nicely.
Mvc-275w.mpg Listen for native bird call right at the end. (1.4mb takes about 6 mins to download). Noise at cruise speed is fine - still quiet inside.
Mvc-281w.mpg mpeg of me giving it heaps. (793 kb) The idle is still nice and quiet. Being a movie producer you try to give specific instructions to the film crew (that's Andrew my brother) about how you want the shot framed. Ooh no, he wants his new Falcon in the shot and my Australian safety boots! It's so hard to get good help.....
